Paintings by Mara Scrupe
"My drawings and environmental installations help reestablish a critical, historical, emotional and physical connection between humanity and the natural environment."
Mara Scrupe's work reflects issues relevant to several disciplines including architecture, horticulture, agriculture, the designed landscape and environmentalism. Years ago, she relocated to a relatively isolated location to further nourish these themes within her work. The move allowed her to experience first-hand the relationships between people and the land on which they live.
Her drawings explore a personal iconography gleaned from the nearby landscape, as well as from garden studies, life-drawing, and other more psychological sources. Her community activism has furthered her commitment to investigate, through her artwork, the balance between human industry and human needs, and increased her respect for the natural environment and its healing capacity.
