Paintings by Brett Angell
"My goal has always been to be a quiet and persistent but strong voice. My work has never been for mass appeal but for that individual here and there who finds the connection."
Brett Angell allows every impulse, impetus, and gesture felt during the process of creation to remain in the texture of his paint. Since he avoids preliminary drawings or painted studies, any change in idea, feeling, or handling is recorded in layers of color for the viewer to see.
Paintings on canvas are completed in acrylic paint thinly layered to build up a waxy, finished surface; paintings on paper are made in watercolor and gouache built up in layers over the colored ground. Using water-based paints that are easily altered up to the painting's completion, Angell allows for any last minute change of heart.
