"I apply myself to a traditional subject, the landscape, and a traditional approach to rendering what it is I see."
Preferring to work in pastel because of its "hands-on" quality, Stephenson sculpts and blends pigments to create his pastoral visages. An admitted traditionalist, he is not trying to break new ground. His goals focus on revealing the poeticism of trees, the beauty that man and nature may form in cooperation, and the serendipity that can result from fortuitous accidents upon the surface of his perfected landscapes.
